Pig Traps - Pig Launchers and Receivers

The purpose of a pig launcher or receiver is to insert or retrieve pigs, spheres or inspection tools from a pipeline. Launchers and receivers are designed to meet the specific requirements of a pipeline. To compliment our range of launchers and receivers we have a dedicated in-house team of designers and technicians for all manufacturing and testing of pig trap production to meet specific customer needs. This includes standard launchers and receivers right the way through to skid mounted pig trap units, including valves of assorted pipework.

Glapwell manufacture a full range of custom built pig, sphere and scraper launching and receiving traps for onshore, offshore and subsea applications, all specific to clients project specification and International design codes and suitable for Non Sour and Sour Service which require NACE and HIC / SSCC materials.

Our range is 6" NB to 54" NB and from class 150# to 2500# & API 10000.

In addition to the supply of pig / sphere / scraper traps we also supply, design and manufacture associated equipment and in a range of materials.

All work is carried out in strict accordance with all International Quality Standards as well as adhering to International Health and Safety Standards. Our high regard for optimum quality has resulted in the following certification being awarded:

  • BS EN ISO 9001 Quality Management System
  • Authorised ASME VIII Div. 1 (U) Code stamp holders
  • PED (Pressure Equipment Directive)

PIGGING - "the Definition"
  • "Pigging in the context of pipelines refers to the practice of using pipeline inspection guages or 'pigs' to perform verious maintenance operations on a pipeline".

These operations include, but are not limited to cleaning and inspection of the pipeline. This is accomplished by inserting the 'pig launcher' (or 'launching station') - a funnel shaped Y section in the pipeline. The launcher / launching station is then closed and the pressure driven flow of the product in the pipeline is used to push it along down the pipe until it reaches the receiving trap.

If the pipeline contains butterfly valves, or reduced port ball valves, the pipeline cannot be pigged. Full port (or full bore) ball valves cause no problems because the inside diameter of the ball is the same as that of the pipe.
